Playlists for Going Home for the Holidays

Author: Hannah Petty

As the holidays creep closer more and more students are preparing for a trip back home. Whether it be by plane, train, or automobile it’s always good to have a little entertainment along the way. As for me, it only takes about an hour by car to make it to my parents’ house. This gives me plenty of time to scroll through some of my favorite songs on my road trip playlist. For those of you who are preparing your own playlists for the trip home, here are some suggestions to keep in mind. From one music-loving traveler to another, I hope you enjoy!

Pop/Pop Rock

I often start with some pop/pop rock music. Lately, I’ve discovered Kesha’s newest album, Rainbow, and I’ve spent a lot of driving time going through it. I do jump around a lot between artists, however. I usually throw in some Imagine Dragons, Panic at the Disco, and a few others. Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Let ‘Em Talk by Kesha
  2. Hymn by Kesha
  3. Learn To Let Go by Kesha
  4. Rainbow by Kesha
  5. Born To Be Yours by Imagine Dragons
  6. Hey Look Ma, I Made It by Panic! at the Disco
  7. High Hopes by Panic! at the Disco 8. 2002 by Anne-Marie
  8. Delicate by Taylor Swift
  9. No Tears Left To Cry by Ariana Grande
  10. God Is A Woman by Ariana Grande
Rock

After every few songs or so I like to switch up genres. So, up next we head into rock. Growing up my parents would always play music around the house. Naturally, I inherited a lot of the same tastes as them. For this next list, you’re going to see quite a few 70s and 80s artists. In honor of the release of Bohemian Rhapsody in theaters, I also chose to share the Queen songs I often have ready to go when in the car. Here are some of my favorite rock songs:

  1. Only The Good Die Young by Billy Joel
  2. The Longest Time by Billy Joel
  3. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen
  4. Under Pressure by Queen
  5. Somebody To Love by Queen
  6. Jack & Diane by John Mellencamp
  7. Shadows Of The Night by Pat Benatar
  8. Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas
  9. Stone In Love by Journey
  10. You Shook Me All Night Long by AC/DC
Hip-Hop

Now we move on to some hip-hop. This playlist includes all the songs that make me wanna get up and dance. Unfortunately, this is a road trip playlist, so excessive hand motions have to suffice. Here are some of my favorites:

  1. Dessert by Dawin
  2. Red Nose by Sage the Gemini
  3. Does Ya Mama Know? by 99 Percent
  4. All Night Longer by Sammy Adams
  5. Paranoid by Ty Dolla $ign ft B.o.B
  6. Uproar by Lil’ Wayne ft. Swizz Beatz
  7. I Like It by Cardi B ft. Bad Bunny and J Balvin
  8. Downtown by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis ft. Grandmaster Melle Mel, Eric Nally, Grandmaster Caz, and Kool Moe Dee
  1. Gas Pedal by Sage the Gemini ft. Iamsu!
  2. Jordan Belfort by Wes Walker ft. Dyl
Country

Finally, we reach the country music. I had listened to this genre on occasion growing up, but it wasn’t until I got to college and met all my small town friends that my love for it grew. Here are some of my favorite country songs:

  1. Forever Country by Artists of Then, Now, & Forever
  2. Bar at the End of the World by Kenny Chesney
  3. Rain is a Good Thing by Luke Bryan
  4. Homegrown by Zac Brown Band
  5. Heartache on the Dance Floor by Jon Pardi
  6. American Kids by Kenny Chesney
  7. Desperate Man by Eric Church
  8. Down to the Honkytonk by Jake Owen
  9. Do I Make You Wanna by Billy Currington
  10. In Case You Didn’t Know by Brett Young

Whether you live near or far, or maybe you’re already at home, I hope some of these suggestions can keep you and the family dancing. Happy Thanksgiving!
